Multiple Australian Champion David Sera enjoyed a a perfect opening day performance in the KZ2 Gearbox class at Round Two of the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE.

Sera was flawless in his Deadly Kart setting a comfortable pole position and then annexing a pair of wins in the two heat races held this afternoon.

Kyle Ensbey – who withdrew from the opening event last month with an abdominal injury qualified second and finished second in the second heat – looking good on his return to the wheel. Others to impress included Energy Corse’s Josh Fife and Ricciardo Kart driver, Troy Loeskow.

In the KA2 elite junior division, Gold Coaster Lachlan Hughes’ great form continued. He set his second consecutive pole position, but was able to back up the pace with a trio of wins in his Kosmic Kart.

He was kept honest though by fellow Queenslander, Broc Feeney who finished second in two of the heats.

In TaG, Brendan Nelson – who has been dubbed then TaG Tornado – showed a clean set of wheels for in qualifying, setting pole then securing two race wins. Things aren’t as clear cut as they may seem for the Kaos Karting FA Kart driver with Joshua Car keeping him very honest, stealing the second heat race win and taking second in both other heats.

New South Welshman Car also showed pace in the X30 division, setting the pole position and taking the third heat race. He finished second in the remaining heats, sharing the race wins with Queenslander, Adam Mercer who is showing some great form this weekend and defending Australian Champion, Daniel Rochford.

A local battle royal is forming between Victorians Jordan Nicolaou and Cody Donald in KA3 Senior. The pair have been inseparable throughout the three heats today – Donald claiming heat one, but Nicolaou fighting back in the remaining two races. Justin Francis snuck past Donald late in the second heat and both he and Matthew McLean are well in the hunt come tomorrow’s fourth heat and final.

In KA1, Shamick Racing pilot, Cory Arnett has exploded into Senior racing, the 14-year-old winning on debut in the high powered division. He showed great maturity to hold out a charging Reece Sidebottom – the round one dominator firing through from the rear of grid for Reevu Helmets.

Defending Champion, Holden Kart Team JC Kart driver, Liam McLellan experienced trouble mid-way through the opening heat race, finishing sixth, but in the second one was able to push forward for an ominous win. HDR Arrow Racing’s Scott Sorensen finished both his heats in the top three, which bodes well for a strong performance tomorrow.

Tasmanian, Tate Frost stunned in KA4 Junior qualifying by taking his FA Kart to pole position – becoming the first Tasmanian to set a pole position since the inception of the AKC format.

After not having the pace in the early heats, he ended the day with a heat race win. His win came at the misfortune of Sydney-based Scuderia PCR driver Benito Montalbano who crossed the line first but was later rubbed out due to a technical issue. Montalbano had won both heats to that point.

The battle is tight right throughout the capacity 43 kart field though.

Kobi Williams has been the pace-setter in the Cadet 12 division, setting the pole time and winning the first two heats. Shamick Racing CRG drivers, Kai Allen and James Wharton are right there as well, Allen, the round one winner taking the third heat. Fletcher Harris has also been impressive through today’s activities.

Cadet 9 remains an open book come tomorrow’s final heat and final with Dominic Attard taking two dominant wins – but a front straight fracas at the start of heat two saw him drop through the field. Pole-sitter Leon Cordato is quick, whilst Alex Ninovic is recovering from not setting a time in qualifying to winning heat two and coming home third in the third race of the day.

Tomorrow, the fourth round of heats will take place for all classes, with some still yet to complete their third round.

All races will be livestreamed via www.karting.net.au from 8:30am Australian Eastern Daylight Savings time.
