Consistent rain ensured Australia’s top drivers were tested during qualifying day at Round Four of the 2014 CIK Stars of Karting Championship presented by Castrol EDGE in Newcastle today.

Following almost ten millimetres of rain overnight, the fickle weather continued to soak the Cameron Park circuit for the majority of the day as drivers tested the limits of adhesion.

On the circuit where he claimed a record-breaking 17th National Championship in April, David Sera was the dominant force in the KZ2 class. After qualifying fastest to claim his second consecutive Freem fastest qualifier award, Sera was unmatched in the varied conditions faced during the day.

Opening round winner Kyle Ensbey kept Sera honest throughout the day with some strong speed and will occupy the outside of the front row on the grid for tomorrow’s opening final.

Championship leader Joey Hanssen was forced to start from the rear of the grid after receiving a penalty in qualifying, Kel Treseder faced a similar fate when his transponder came adrift early in the 10-minute qualifying session.

Treseder’s day went from bad to worse at the start of the opening heat when he was caught up in a start line fracas when Brock Plumb stalled on the line. The impact destroyed Treseder’s Energy chassis forcing him to revert to a back-up machine.

In the KF2 ranks Scuderia PCR Australia driver Nathan Tigani was the pacesetter when he secured the Freem Fastest qualifier award and won two of the three heat races. A broken chain, while leading by 9.9 seconds was the only thing that halted him in the opening heat.

Harrington Doyle Racing Arrow Karts pilot Scott Sorensen showed good speed to charge through the field after dramas in the qualifying session. Championship leaders Troy Loeskow and Matthew Waters both encountered DNFs throughout the day that will certainly have Championship implications.

In the KF3 ranks Zane Morse won the opening two heat races to continue his mid-season charge towards the top of the championship standings. He will start from pole position in tomorrow’s opening 25-lap final.

Freem Fastest qualifier Jayden Ojeda won the final heat ahead of Karting World’s Andrew Kahl while Aaron Cameron’s consistency will see him line up alongside Morse tomorrow morning.

In the TAG 125 Light Monaco driver Daniel Rochford was the pacesetter while David Whitmore claimed a trio of top three finishes. Brendan Nelson will start on pole position in tomorrow’s TAG 125 Heavy pre-final with fellow Queenslander Gaven Whitmore alongside.

Series leader Jack Doohan qualified on pole position in the Rookies but a mechanical issue prior to the start left him to watch on as Zac Crichton took the win.

Lady racer Melissa Whitmore qualified fastest and won the opening heat of Restricted 125 Light.
