WATER spraying from his tyres, kart sliding sideways and the throttle still pressed strongly, Jono Cox ran away with the first race in Gladstone’s Tag Restricted Light class.

Having only started karting in September of last year, Cox joined his brother Jeff at the wheel, and never expected to succeed so quickly, or with such ease in the wet.

Though a tune-up event in Ipswich was the only driving Cox had done since the finish of the 2013 season, the 28-year-old is quickly finding himself among the elite of Gladstone karting.

It is a place where he plans on staying.

“I wouldn’t mind top three in Gladstone and I want to go away a bit as well,” Cox said.

“I started on my P plates last year and now I get to start up the front it is easier.”

In addition to being at the front of the pack, Cox also counts having John Grother onboard as a sponsor and mentor as a big part of his result.

Headed back to Ipswich next month, Cox already has the form on the board early in the season.

“I was sixth of 42 karts the first time I drove the track,” he said.

“We are headed to the CIK series, we just go for fun.”

Unsure of what exactly the future holds in his karting, Cox is keen just to be on track, emulating the professionals he watches on television, having always been drawn to the sport.
