Fullwood puts foot down for huge win - From the NT News

IT was double joy for Darwin kart racer Bryce Fullwood after he became the first Territorian to win an event at the Australian Karting Championships held in Murray Bridge over the weekend.

The Territory flyer was favourite to win the national championship last year on his home track, but South Australian Luke Marquis stole his limelight. This year, it was his time to shine with a dominant victory.

Starting on pole in the final of the Junior National Light at the Monarto Karting Complex, the 14-year-old put last year’s disappointment behind him and skittled the field to win the 16-lap race by an impressive 3.7 seconds.

He won from Victorian Dylan Hollis who was narrowly ahead of Sydney’s Jayden Ojeda and Adelaide’s Tyler Morrison.

Fullwood didn’t have an easy entry into the final after being clipped and turned around in a lead up heat and the pre- final, but he recovered and went into the final full of confidence after earlier putting up a good performance in the Junior National Heavies, with a fifth place.

‘‘I went in pretty confident after racing well in the Heavies earlier in the day and I knew my lightkart was in good shape,’’ he said.

‘‘I started from pole but the racer outside me got the start and lead through the first and second corners, but I passed him before the lap ended and was never headed.’’

Adding to the enjoyment of the title victory, the Australian Motor Sport Foundation ( AMSF) announced Fullwood was among six Australian top young kart racers that will form its 2013 Rookie Rising Stars scholarship program. The scholarship provides support from the peak body including mentoring camps and elite driver training.
