Double Victory in Formula Masters China Series for Aidan Wright

Australian karter Aidan Wright has claimed victory in two out of three races in the first round of the Formula Masters China Series in Zhuhai over the weekend. It was a wet weekend and after dominating the practice sessions, Wright looked set to impress in qualifying. However, the rain played havoc with his plans and caused him to spin off the track ending in a disappointing start position of 3rd and 6th respectively.

Race 1 saw Wright well placed to win. After beginning 3rd on the grid, he took the lead during the first lap. With 5 laps to go, the safety car was deployed following an accident on the circuit, and on the restart a defensive move by Wright resulted in him crashing out, causing minor damage to his car and recording a DNF.

After recording the fastest lap in Race 1, Wright started Race 2 on pole position. Meritus GP teammate and Malaysian young gun, Afiq Ikwhan, overtook Wright on turn 1 though he was quick to take back his lead. After a close battle, Wright crossed the finish line in first place, winning his first race in Formula cars.

In front of a roaring crowd, racing resumed on Sunday with the 3rd and final race of the weekend. It looked to be an uphill battle for Wright, after starting from 6th position, however he blitzed the field after a gutsy outside takeover on the first turn. With two laps to go he had a 2 second lead and drove home to victory.

“This is going to be one to remember. It is such an amazing feeling, I am over the moon,” Wright said on the phone from Zhuhai.

He now heads back to Malaysia to train up and coming drivers in the new Asia Cup series before returning to China at the end of May for Round 2 in Shanghai. He is currently leading the championship on 40 points. To follow Aidan in the series you can visit his website, www.aidanwrightracing.com, or find him on facebook.com/aidanwrightracing
