Council funding boost for city projects - From the North West Star

GRANT RECIPIENTS: MIGATE operations manager Bonnie MacRae, North West Queensland Soccer representative councillor Kim Coghlan, Mount Isa Rugby League president Masina Taulealo, Mount Isa Go Kart Inc nationals co-ordinator Shane Thirlwall, Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady, Mount Isa Eisteddfod president Chris Dealing, Cr Jean Ferris, and Parkrun Mount Isa organiser Joanne Crooks.

MOUNT Isa City Council grants have been awarded to organisations developing responsible initiatives, Mayor Tony McGrady says.

The six grant recipients to receive council funding at a ceremony in the council chambers on Wednesday were MIGATE, Mount Isa Rugby League, Parkrun Mount Isa, Mount Isa Go Kart Inc, Mount Isa Eisteddfod and North West Soccer Zone Inc.

Cr McGrady said the council was delighted to support these organisations.

The grants will be used for various initiatives, including increasing water usage efficiency, encouraging families to be active, and attracting visitors to Mount Isa.

Grant money received by the organisations ranged between $500 and $7000.

Mount Isa Eisteddfod president Chris Dealing said the $7000 received for the event would go towards running costs, including the hiring of the civic centre.

Mount Isa Go Kart Inc received $2000, which will be used to host the 2014 National Dirt Track Go Kart Championships.

The council will also provide $3000 of assistance towards the running of the event, which will cover council staff hours, additional wheelie bins, porta-loos and watering of the grounds before the event.

Parkrun Mount Isa organiser Joanne Crooks said she was planning a running event to be held later this year at Lake Moondarra.

The free event would encourage families to participate.

Ms Crooks said $10,000 would be needed to hold the event.

The $2000 grant provided by the council would “definitely get us under way”.
