Wright matches it with the world’s best karters – from Cairns Post

A LUCKLESS final round in Italy’s Under-18 World Karting Championships will not haunt Cairns’ Aidan Wright, the driver doing enough to show he belongs on the same track as the world’s best.

The 16-year- old karter was plagued by engine problems and the innocent victim in several crashes that saw him finish 27th overall in the 34-kart field on the Sarno circuit.

But two fourths, a sixth and an eighth place in the four heats before the main race proved he has the speed to rival the best and he will return to Australia confident of his standing in the sport.

“The weekend was full of ups and downs while the final result wasn’t there,” Wright said.

“But to know I could match the speed of the world’s best drivers – in both dry and wet conditions – is very pleasing.”

“After a great run in the heat races I was very confident of a top result in the final, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.”
The teenager said driving for the green and gold was something he would not soon forget.

“It has been an honour to fly the Aussie flag against drivers from all across the world and I’d really like to thank my family for their continued support of my career.”
