ELEVEN-year-old Nathan Hadlow has a dream to race V8 Supercars, just like his cousin and V8 supercar champion Mark Skaife. “I used to think that I could be like him one day,” Nathan said.
“Then one day he came to my grandma’s birthday and he said if I wanted to drive V8 Supercars I should start from the bottom – which is go-karts – and work my way up.”
Nathan took his famous cousin’s advice and bought himself a kart, with a little help from his mum and dad.
“Then I came along to the first come and try day at the (Whitsunday) Raceway,” he said.
“I thought it was really fun and something I’d definitely like for years to come.”
In the last six months Nathan has progressed to racing his go-kart on the local track as well as Townsville and Mackay. He has been to the North Queensland Sprints in Townsville and already has three trophies to his name.
“Starting with go-karts teaches kids to be better drivers on the roads and it’s a good sport to get teenagers off the streets,” he said.
“It’s also a good family sport and I’d encourage other families to give it a go.”
While Nathan continues to race he still has his eye firmly fixed on the supercar sport.
“My next goal is hopefully to go to a driving school then ultimately I’d like to join a V8 Supercar racing team,” he said.
