Sydney kart racer Matthew Waters has finished off his preparations for the upcoming New South Wales State Championships (Sep 30 – Oct 2) in an almost perfect style at Newcastle’s Mt Sugarloaf Raceway on the weekend.

In the final shakedown event ahead of the titles, hosted by the North Shore Kart Club at the Newcastle circuit, the 21 year-old proved victorious in both the Clubman Light and Senior National Light categories aboard his Tesa tape-backed entries.

Ironically, in the category where he is a dual National Champion, Senior National Heavy, was where he was forced to settle for second place behind Corey Lean.

Aaron Borg and Daniel Baker pressured three-time Australian Champion Jason Hryniuk all throughout the racing before he won the final race in the Clubman Heavy category. Borg claimed second place ahead of the hard charging Domenic Marciano.

Stefan Stankovic and Dimitri Agathos challenged each other at the front of the field in the Junior National Light category. Agathos was victorious in the opening three races, however, it was Stankovic who took out the main event.

Despite having to start well down the order after failing to finish the pre-final, Agathos charged through the field to claim the victory in the Junior National Heavy category. Sarah Collins crossed the line second ahead of Damon Schofield.

Reigning CIK Stars of Karting Series Champion Pierce Lehane rounded out his preparations for the championships with a domination of the Junior Max category ahead of category debutants Callum Walker and Lachlan McHugh.

North Shore Kart Club President Peter Galvin indicated that he was pleased with the weekend’s event and is looking forward to a great event in two weeks time for the State Championships.

“It was fantastic to see a great roll up of entries, around 200 in total, even a few drivers made the long trip down from Queensland for the Shakedown event,” said Galvin.

“The committee put a lot of thought into how the classes would run so as to give the competitors a good feel of what the track conditions will like be at the upcoming State Championships.

“The committee and I would like to thank the competitors for how they not only supported North Shore Kart Club but also the way they conducted themselves over the weekend.

“We would also like to thank everyone from the Newcastle Club especially the committee who have really gone out of their way to make North Shore Kart Club feel at home in Newcastle.”

Practice for the New South Wales State Championships begins next Wednesday September 28 ahead of qualifying on Friday September 30. The heat races will be contested on Saturday October 1 followed by the championship finals on Sunday October 2.
