Candice Dillon is excelling in a male-dominated sport, winning a go-karting silver medal at the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide.
The Aberfoyle Park resident said she was “surprised” to finish second in the 125cc leopard light class 15-lap race last month – against men.
“I’m a five-foot-two female racing against men and I was the only female in the field,” Dillon said.
“I’m just a small girl in a male-dominated sport.
“People can’t believe it when I tell them what I do – I’m an administration assistant and I don’t look like your average racer.”
Dillon, 32, who grew up in Belair, has raced go-karts for 20 years.
For much of that time she drove on dirt tracks, but last year moved to racing on bitumen in her Track Warrior go-kart.
“I got into the sport through my family involvement,” she said.
“My father (Paul Lambe) and my husband’s father (Gary Dillon) raced in speedway and that’s how I got into it. Now, I practise with my husband Luke (Dillon), who races sprint cars in speedway.”
