STATE HONOURS UP FOR GRABS IN BUNBURY NEXT WEEKEND

The honour of being crowned a State Karting Champion is up for grabs when the Bunbury City Kart Club hosts the 2012 Nash Bros. Western Australian Open Sprint Kart Championships next weekend.

A total of 15 championships will be up for grabs, from the drivers in the Cadets category as young as seven years of age through to the ‘more experienced in life’ competing in the Over 40’s category.

The Junior National Light category will see a huge field of 30 drivers will line up on the grid where Brock Boley will be one of the drivers looking to keep the state honours in Bunbury. Boley will face tough opposition from last year’s champion in the Rookies category Nikola Mitic along with Thomas Schou and Joshua Wood. Adding an interstate feel to the Junior National Light category will be Darwin drivers Bryce Fullwood, Brodie Green, Nathan Norman and Thomas Maxwell along with Victorian Jay Morrison.

After recently being crowned the National Champion, local driver James Allen will start as one of the favourites in the Junior National Heavy category where he will line up against the likes of multiple-time state champion Nicholas Rowe and Jesse Elliott. Other Bunbury locals in the 27-kart field include Kurt Lilley, Chad Pittard, Thomas Harders, Domenic Marchese and Braydon Mortimer.

With 235 entries having been received for the championships, Karting WA President Gary Light believes next weekend’s event will provide some great action.

“This weekend has been the result of the hard work of a lot of people in Karting WA and the Bunbury City Kart Club and I’m really looking forward to everyone having a great event,” said Light.

“With numbers slightly up on last year’s event, it’s a good sign for the sport here in Western Australia and the level of drivers we’ve got here are equal to anywhere in the country, so the racing all weekend will be some of the best that you’ll see anywhere in Australia.”

Drivers and team will begin arriving in the Bunbury area on Tuesday to begin practice on Wednesday, which will continue on Thursday ahead of Qualifying on Friday, Heat Races on Saturday and the Championship Finals on Sunday.

The Bunbury City Kart Club is located on the South West Highway, next to the speedway.
