DODGES Ferry schoolboy Sam Gala was one of the hotshots in Tasmanian kart racing’s Midget class and now he is making his mark in the hotly contested Rookie class.
Sam, 11, has already won his first race in his switch to the more powerful category.
This weekend he has the chance to win his home club’s statewide title when the Southern Tasmanian Kart Club throws open the doors to all comers for its annual club championship today and tomorrow.
The Rookies hit between 90 and 100km/h on the open straights thanks to their 100cc two-stroke power packs.
Tasmania’s rising karting stars will converge on Orielton raceway for the STKC event, which is one of the highlights oF the karting calendar.
The competitors in the eight classes will range from sevenyears-old in the Midgets to the open age group in the Open Tag Class, which will lap Orielton in about 42 seconds.
The titles will be conducted in a series of heats on both days, with finals scheduled for tomorrow.
