Today the 4th edition of the traditional ROTAX Winter Cup kicked off on the Spanish track of Campillos. Almost 100 drivers seized their chance of the very first competition of the year, starting with the qualifying practice on the 1.588 metres long track.
In MAX Junior category it was Japan’s Sena Sakaguchi (Intrepid Driver Program) setting the first benchmark of the season. “It is the third time I am racing in Europe at all. I am really happy with this result although we expected a top position after our good results in free practice”, Sakaguchi states.
The greatest competition seems to be reserved for the MAX Seniors, which today was a clear win for James Singleton (Cole Racing) from Great Britain: “We hoped for a top five result. So finally it even got best time. For tomorrow I like to confirm this result.”
In this first trial of strength between the DD2 drivers the reigning Euro Challenge Champion in the Senior category, Sean Babington (Dan Holland Racing), was quickest on track, demonstrating that he is ready to take the challenge in DD2 as well. “This weekend is my very first start in DD2. It is really working well this far and I hope to keep this up”, Babington says on Friday evening.
Tomorrow nine qualifying heats will determine the final starting grid for the final phase on Sunday. So nothing is decided yet, but some favourites already begin to stand out. Now the upcoming races have to prove if the quickest on a lap will be fastest over a distance as well.
