The battle for victory in this weekend’s 11th Annual Rotax Karting Nationals at Geelong, Victoria isn’t the only thing the competitors will be vying for.

With ten drivers from the event being offered the opportunity to compete in the Rotax World Challenge Grand Final at Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE later this year, the battle for valuable points in the National Rotax Rankings will be just as vital.

Based on the accumulative points from selected events throughout the year, and with a significant weighting towards this weekend’s titles, the top three drivers in each of the Junior Max and Rotax Light categories, the Rotax Heavy points winner, top two from the DD2 standings and the highest ranked DD2 driver aged over 32, will get the opportunity to compete in the overseas event.

Many of the drivers who are in contention for this year’s seats have attended the World Finals previously, making Ian Black of International Karting Distributors (Australian importer of the Rotax engine) confident of a strong showing on the world stage.

“Last year we finished third in the Nations Cup standings and with a lot of experienced drivers in line for spots on the grid this year I’m confident that we’ll be able to go even better in 2011,” said Black.

“With the largest overall entries that we’ve ever received for this event being received, there will be some exciting racing all weekend long.”

This weekend is the first time since 2005 that the Geelong Karting Club has hosted the Rotax Nationals with David Sera (Rotax Light) and William Yarwood (Rotax Heavy) victorious at that event.

Competitors from every state of the country will be lining up, drivers and teams began arriving in Geelong yesterday ahead of practice today and tomorrow with qualifying and heat races to be contested on Saturday. The championship finals will be contested on Sunday.

The Geelong Karting Club is located at Beckley Park, Geelong Rd, Corio (Adjacent to the Geelong Trotting track, North of Geelong). Admission is free for spectators.

If you can’t make it to the event, can follow all the action will be updated on the Australian Karting Association’s Twitter account (@karting_net_au) and Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/AustralianKartingAssociation) along with the CM:S timing system (https://app.austkarting.com.au/aka/results/) and IKD’s Twitter account (@RotaxProTour) throughout the weekend.
