An icon of New South Wales karting, Alan Cox, was farewelled in Tamworth earlier this week.

Sadly Mr Cox passed away on Monday, May 9, at the age of 89.

Mr Cox joined the Tamworth Kart Racing Club in 1963 and while he never actually raced, his contribution to the sport in country New South Wales was simply amazing.

During his association with karting , Mr Cox held every position on the committee of the Tamworth Kart Racing Club and was awarded life membership of the club in 1985.

The club’s blue ribbon event was named after Mr Cox during the 1990s and has since become one of the largest race meetings in the region. This year’s Alan Cox Cup, to be held on August 27/28, will also incorporate the celebration of 50 years of karting in Tamworth.

“Alan was instrumental right from the formative years of the Tamworth Kart Racing Club through until only a few years ago, we will forever be indebted for the dedication he showed towards the club and the sport of karting,” said Tamworth Kart Racing Club President Tom Sanderson.
