No-go karts as rain puts end to race - From the Cairns Post

IT was supposed to be a 100-lap endurance race but Cairns Kart Club’s end-of-year celebration had to be cancelled before the drivers had a chance to start their engines.

Heavy rains at Edmonton Speedway on Saturday afternoon saw the 100 Lapper Endurance Sprint cancelled after the first qualifying race.

‘‘We were under about 2m of water,’’ driver Lydon Dodge said. ‘‘Unfortunately we weren’t able to get it going.’’

The meeting is one of the most popular of the year and drew a field that included some of Cairns’ top drivers.

Australian Formula 3 runner up John Magro, Formula Masters Series China champion Aidan Wright and Suzuki Swift Racing Series driver Callan Sayers were set to compete.

Dodge said the event could not be rescheduled because of the increasing chance of rain.

‘‘We’ve tried it in the past but there’s too much chance of rain and people are getting away for holidays … it just doesn’t work,’’ he said.
