Bruce and Denise Morcombe said thank you to the Gympie karting community on Sunday.
PARENTS of murdered Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe, Bruce and Denise, said thank you to the Gympie karting community on Sunday.
The couple made the trip north from the Sunshine Coast to collect the $8000 raised by the Cooloola Kart Club from the Harrington Doyle Racing Race for Daniel held in January.
The Morcombes were gracoius while accepting the donation.
In front of packed grid, before the drivers briefing at Sunday’s club championship, Bruce thank all involved.
He said the money would go toward educating children in schools about stranger danger and helping teenagers who had been victims of crime.
Before the presentation Bruce spoke to The Gympie Times.
He said he and Denise had just returned from a tour of schools around Bundaberg and Gayndah spreading the stranger danger message.
He said the couple was committed about getting the message out to as many students as possible and had linked with education Queensland.
The couple said another great thing The Daniel Morcombe Foundation does and doesn’t get much publicity for, due to privacy reasons, is help victims of crime.
Bruce said it was a way the foundation could help people and see immediate effects.
He and Denise had just received a Christmas card and a donation from the first victim they had ever helped.
He now has a job in the mines.
They said it was great feeling to make a difference in someone’s life.
Cooloola Kart Club spokeswoman Kym Coomber said it was a great to be able to donate the $8000 to such a worthy foundation.
“Everything went really well,” Coomber said.
“Bruce and Denise stayed around and met a few drivers and officials involved in the day.
“Denise indicated she would love to have a go in a go kart.
“I told her we could organise a day for her without the press around.”
Coomber said now the club had finalised the Race for Daniel day they could now start promoting the Rotax Pro Tour round being held in Gympie late in the year.
