CIK Stars of Karting Series competitor Anthony Martin was recently awarded the Goldfields Rising Sports Star of the Year Award in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
It is the first time a motorsport competitor has been presented with the award, it has generally been dominated by footballers, cricketers, hockey and soccer players.
As a part of his prize, Martin won a unique Goldfields trophy, the bottom is timber that has been retrieved from the Kalgoorlie Super Pit from the old stopes and shafts, so the wood is around 100 years old, the next part is Kalgoorlie granite and a local engineering firm manufactured the metal part on top. He also was presented with a caricature of himself and a $100 Sports Power voucher.
The Sports Star of the Year Award (for those 17 and over) went to 18 year-old Jessica Moore for motor cross – so the top two gongs went to motor sports – first time again in the history of the Awards – in the past it has been mainly the likes of cricket, football, hockey and volleyball as the sport recipient.
Following this award on November 11, the Goldfields Region of the Department of Sport and Recreation has nominated Anthony for the Regional West Australian Rising Star of the Year Award.
