Locals in form for state titles – From the Gladstone Observer

THEY are calling it the shakedown and Gladstone Karting Club certainly did so, taking out podium places in every race at the Gladstone track on the weekend.

Gladstone Kart Club president David Bennet said the weekend served as a test run for the KTEQ Queensland Open Titles to be held in Gladstone in April.

“It was a full rundown and we received a glowing report,” Bennet said.

After more than a decade since the last state title was held in the region, Bennet said it was “absolutely fabulous” for Gladstone to host the event.

The weekend also served as a warm-up for local karters. “Once you get bigger fields and better competition, it’s much better practice for our guys.”

Team Grand members – Craig Butler, Denis Butler and his sons Nick and Josh – all appreciated the chance to burn some rubber against competitors from as far north as Cairns and as far south as the Gold Coast.

Both Craig and Denis placed first in their races for the Clubman heavy and Clubman over-40s categories, respectively.

Denis said it was good to get back to the winners’ circle in the lead-up to states.

“(The other competitors) were some of the best in the country,” Denis said.

Although son Nick had a disappointing weekend in the rookies category, he said Josh made good times in the midget category. “Josh is a deadset contender (for the state titles).

“He is going to go real close,” he said.

Craig said the weekend left him happy with the speeds he was making and being able to go head to head with one of his main competitors, who would also be competing at the KTEQ Queensland Open Titles.

“He will be a main contender for state titles,” Craig said.

“Being able to judge myself against him is a good confidence boost.”
