LOCAL KART RACERS AIMING HIGH IN NEWCASTLE CITY CUP

Kart racers from various parts of New South Wales will take to the Mt Sugarloaf circuit near Newcastle to contest the annual Newcastle City Cup next weekend (August 28/29).

With 15 categories catering for a variety of ages, weights and engine capacities set to compete, the action with come thick and fast across the two days of the event.

One of the local drivers who is expected to figure prominently at next weekend’s event is Breanna Woodland.

While she may still be a couple of years away from obtaining her road licence, Woodland, a Dungog High Year nine student, already knows how to handle a racing machine. She has been racing karts for more than five years and earlier this year she won one of the biggest races of her career when she competed alongside the opening round of the 2010 CIK Stars of Karting Series.

Woodland’s passion for motorsport came through he father, Danny, who was a racer for a number of years.

“When I was younger Dad was racing and he thought it would be good for me to race karts so that when I got my licence I wouldn’t be daunted by driving on the road,” said Woodland.

“While the racing is fun and enjoyable, one of the other great things is that I get to meet heaps of new people from all around the place.”

Woodland is just one of a number of local drivers who will be in action at next weekend’s event.

Steeley Noda-Barnes is another local driver who has performed well throughout the year and is expected to figure prominently in the Clubman Light category next weekend.

In an exciting move for the Newcastle Kart Club for the first time ever the Newcastle City Cup will be run in a clockwise direction. It is anticipated that this direction will be faster than the traditional clockwise direction.

As well as trophies for the first five place getters in each class there will also be prize money of $200, $100 and $50 for the top three place getters in each category.
