COBDEN Go-Kart Track will welcome almost 150 drivers for round three of the Victorian Country Series this weekend.

Series co-ordinator Mick Angwin yesterday said he had received 135 entries across 11 classes for the South West Kart Club-hosted round.

Practice will go ahead tomorrow and racing is on Sunday.

Angwin said he was thrilled with drivers’ support for the round, which came after entries were “lean” last year.

He put the drop in interest in 2012 down to the series having two days of racing.

“(This year) we’ve gone back to our original format that we used to run in the past,” he said. “Last year we had the two-day meeting. Some people said it killed it, some people said it was good.

“Obviously the entries we’ve got is a good scenario.”

South West Kart Club will be well represented on its home track, with Kyle Rethus its leading hope.

Rethus is the points leader in the clubman light class and will also contest tag light. He won the series championship in the cadets, rookies and junior clubman classes as he made his way through the junior ranks.

Camperdown brothers Darcy and Ben Micallef, the sons of wingless sprints driver Phil Micallef, are also in the mix, along with Colac siblings Jaymi and Mitch Mackay.

Angwin said the Cobden track was one of the best to race on in country Victoria.

“It’s a really good, challenging track because every corner is different,” he said.
