THE grids were full at Lagoon Park Raceway on Saturday when 37 karters competed in round three of the Mount Isa Go-Kart Club Championships.
Racers competed in seven classes across the program and club spokesman Matthew Whitehead said the turnout was a great result.
“The number [of karters competing] was a season high for the club,” he said.
In the Cadets category, Anthony English held on for a narrow victory against a highly-improved Bradley Leonard
Lochlan Dew drove well to take third place on the podium.
Paul Thirlwall continued his 2012 season form by comfortably winning the Rookies class.
Thirwall finished the meeting with four wins from five heats.
In her last club meeting, Emmily O’Brien dominated but had to work hard for victory in the Junior National Light category.
Daniel Watt won his first Junior National Light heat to finish as runner-up ahead of Kailee Whitehead in third place and first-time karter Martin O’Brien in forth.
In Junior Clubman, Callum Barr and Sam Lillecrapp were unable to hold off an impressive Emmilly O’Brien, who completed the double after winning earlier in the day.
Senior Clubman Light was a battle of the Matthews, with Matthew Whitehead managing to take the round three victory ahead of Matthew Rogers.
Thomas Glasson overcame a DNF in the fourth heat of the Clubman Heavy to win the class overall, mainly due to a stellar performance in the second heat.
After starting at the rear of the 10-kart field, Glasson wove his way through the pack to claim an unlikely victory on the final lap.
Mick Shearer took second-place honours and Ryan Mackenzie third.
Graham O’Brien complete an impressive triple for the O’Brien family, winning the Touch and Go 100 class ahead of Trevor Hollyman and John Skinner.
