Everybody likes watching the young karter in action and Joel Jamieson was one who was in exceptional form in the cadet division.

With the karting season beginning to heat up, it was expected there would be a big turn-out of competitors at Bundaberg’s Raceway last weekend.

And it proved to be exactly that, with more than 120 competitors travelling from Rockhampton, Gladstone and further afield to take part in round two of the Queensland Country Championships.

“Around 22 local riders competed in Bundaberg, with several racers doing well,” Rockhampton Formula Kart Club spokesman Peter Buchanan said.

The Rockhampton racers sped in the top pack from the junior races to the seniors but the local racers found it hard to steer out in front and often fell behind in second or third place.

Buchanan said the best race of the meet was in the cadets division, when Jamieson continued his reign at the top of his class.

Jamieson, 10, began racing three years ago.

He has competed at the Fifth Victorian Open and South Australian Open and is off to the Northern Territory Championships next month.

“He goes all right,” proud dad Mark Jamieson said.

“It was a good race and to see him come off with a win was exciting.”

Stepping up to the Tag100 races, Rockhampton’s Aiden Schulz powered through to claim both races ahead of Gladstone’s Rae Fothergill.

Rockhampton’s top racer in the Queensland Sportsman Heavy, Brenton Simonds, stole another win to lead the series by seven points.

Another Rockhampton success story was Michael Doherty, in the CQ Sportsman Y Heavy division, while Peter Buchanan took the TAG 125 Heavy win.

Kids and families alike came out to support the racers, who put on a great show for spectators.

When not watching the racers, locals enjoyed checking out the different go-karts on display.

Gladstone will host round three of the series in the upcoming months.
