IT’S BEEN phenomenal, publicity officer Kym Coomber says of the success of The Gympie Times Go-Kart Challenge.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic. The whole state is talking about it and it’s gone national. We have a national website and people are going crazy about it. I think we’ve really started something,” she said.
“Other clubs like Lithgow have an all women’s race to raise money for breast cancer research. This challenge came about when one of our members came to me and said we should run a junior event and raise some money for charity. Craig Doyle who is from Gympie wrote hundreds of letters and prizes for raffles have been from businesses. I’d like to thank everyone who has helped get this event up and running and making it so successful.”
Trials for our readers were held on Saturday with Yani Mouland-Vail and Dean Bull and Myles Borchardt taking out the 10-12 years, 13-15 years and 16+ respectively. Those winners, along with celebrity winner Mark Pagel, will get to do a lap of honour at the Harrington Doyle Racing: Race for Daniel Day on January 15. The race for Daniel will bring the two event together; that way everyone can see them (winners) go around the track.”
Ms Coomber said it is hoped to raise $3000 for Daniel Morcombe Foundation from the January event.
“The Australian Karting Association of Queensland will also donate back the permit fees we have been paying and we are hoping we that might be another $1500.”
Only people who are registered drivers with the Karting Association can register to race at the Day for Daniel and 25 entries have already been received.
“We are hoping for 100.”
The inaugural Harrington Doyle Racing – Race for Daniel Day is more than just another kart race meeting; it will be yet another opportunity to keep a clear focus on Harm Prevention, Child
Safety Awareness and Fun in our communities. Sunshine Coast boy Daniel Morcombe went missing eight years ago, aged 13, and a recent arrest in his case led to a search for his remains in muddy bushland near Beerwah, on the Sunshine Coast.
