Joseph Mawson is racing in Bahrain this Saturday.

This time last year Australian Joseph Mawson, of Hinchinbrook, was riding high in confidence after winning the final round of the CIK-FIA World Under 18 Championship in Sakhir, Bahrain.

Mawson’s win in 2012 was the first by an Australian in a CIK-FIA World Championship event since James Courtney won in 1997.

This weekend he heads back to the Bahrain International Circuit for the first time since his historic victory to contest the second, and final, round of the 2013 CIK-FIA World Championship.

After joining with the iconic Kosmic Factory Team for his 2013 World Championship assault and heading to a circuit that he has some great memories from, Mawson is high in confidence as he gets set to tackle his final event of 2013.

“I have a great memories from Bahrain last year winning the final round of the Under 18 Championship but I’m certainly under no illusions about how much tougher it will be to get a result,” Mawson said.

“I’m racing in a different kart to what I was in last year, with a faster engine and grippier tyres, but these are all things I’m confident I can adapt to and hopefully finish the year on a high.”

In October, Mawson competed in the IAME World Challenge in France aboard a Kosmic chassis to gain valuable track time and also develop a relationship with his mechanic for the final round, Alex Baten.

“Racing in the IAME World Challenge Final was a great boost for me.  There were 126 drivers in the senior class and I ran at the front all throughout the weekend.  It really gave me some confidence back, which I have been lacking a bit of this year since coming to Europe,” Mawson, 17, said.

“I feel more confident than I have all year going into this weekend.  By working with Alex in France I feel as though we already have a great understanding of each other.  He is one of the most experienced mechanics going around and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
