HEAT RACE ACTION FROM SUPERNATIONALS (including Main Event starting positions)

Today’s action will saw drivers compete in the final two heat races at the 14th Annual SuperNationals in Las Vegas, America.

Australians in the morning session include Matthew Wall and Kel Treseder in a star studded KZ2 class along with Joseph Mawson, Adrian Lazzaro and Scott Foster in TaG Junior.

The afternoon’s sessions feature David Sera and Kris Wall in TaG Senior, Kip Foster, Craig Willis and Eric Smith in TaG Master. Sera is also doubling up to compete in the S1 gearbox class.

The weather was extremely unseasonable with winds of up to 50 mph throughout the day and a high of just 17 degrees celcius followed by late afternoon rain. It was just like being in Melbourne in the middle of July.

Detailed below is a wrap of the Australians and also their starting positions for tomorrow’s Main Events.

HEAT RACE DAY AT 14th ANNUAL SUPERNATIONALS
Australian driver summary

TAG Junior
Heat Two

A vs C Heat
Scott Foster – 11th
Adrian Lazzaro – 24th

Race Notes:
Lap one carnage on turn two delayed both Australian drivers in the opening heat for the round. Scott Foster was forced to take avoiding action while Adrian Lazzaro was caught right in the middle of it and as a result dropped behind the field.

Foster showed some impressive speed to charge his way back up to 11th at the finish, Lazzaro also looked good but just lost too much ground in the opening lap incident.

C vs D Heat
Joseph Mawson – 2nd

Race Notes:
Joseph Mawson got the jump from the start and opened a handy buffer but his Arrow team-mate Austin Self closed in on him over the closing stages and shadowed his every move over the closing stages. Self got a slipstream onto the main straight for the final time and too the win by 0.0017 seconds.

Heat Three
A vs D Heat
Adrian Lazzaro – 4th

Race Notes:
Adrian Lazzaro ran strongly all throughout the race, a set up change post race one gave him good speed aboard the Arrow kart to see him finish 4th to gain valuable points towards a strong starting position in tomorrow’s final

B vs C Heat
Joseph Mawson – 2nd
Scott Foster – DNF

Race Notes:
Joseph Mawson led the way early before being caught by the chasing bunch who made it a five-way battle for the lead. After several lead changes Mawson crossed the line in second position for the second time today.

Foster encountered a mechanical failure prior to the start of the race which forced him onto the sidelines.

KZ2
Heat Two

Matthew Wall – 14th
Kel Treseder – 16th

Race Notes:
A reasonably straight-forward affair for both Australian drivers, both showed some strong pace and kept clear of trouble – unlike several of the leading contenders such as Marco Ardigo and Bietske Visser.

Heat Two
Kel Treseder – 15th
Matthew Wall – DNF

Race Notes:
When a Bietske Visser stalled on the line on the inside row and several karts collided in front of him it left Matthew Wall nowhere to go. Unfortunately he was unable to restart his kart and was forced to watch from the sidelines. On the positive side for Wall, his kart was not one of the four that were destroyed in the incident.

Kel Treseder showed some good early speed and then had to avoid an incident which cost him a couple of positions, he was running as high as 13th before losing two spots in the closing stages.

TaG Master
Heat Two
Kip Foster – 2nd
Craig Willis – 16th
Eric Smith – DNF

Race Notes:
Kip Foster was once again strong while Craig Willis charged from the back and Eric Smith was involved in an opening lap incident that caused significant damage to his kart.

Heat Three
Kip Foster – 2nd
Eric Smith – 16th
Craig Willis – 32nd

Race Notes:
In wet conditions Kip Foster opened a gap at the front of the field early in the slippery conditions (caused by a mid afternoon downpour) but as the race wore on he was chased down and eventually finished second. Both Eric Smith and Craig Willis were on the charge but Willis spun with a handful of laps remaining.

S1 – Pro Stock Moto
Heat Two
David Sera – 12th

Heat Three
David Sera – 14th

Race Notes:
For the first time in several years David Sera appears to be seriously challenged by his competitors in the S1 category. While it is his debut in one of America’s toughest categories, he is yet to show the Sera style and hasn’t looked threatening over the weekend.

TaG Senior
Heat Two
A vs C
David Sera – 3rd
Kris Wall – 6th

Race Notes:
In a race that had two red flag incidents followed by rain, yes rain in Las Vegas, and lasted only four laps the action came thick and fast. David Sera started from position three, dropped back to fifth only lap one before coming back to fourth ahead of the first rollover.

Sera made a better start on the complete restart to be running inside the top four at the end of lap one, then went from third to first entering turn one on lap five only to have the red flag come out half a lap later.

While the race only lasted four laps, officials declared the race and the points stand. Luckily for Sera, as he lost his nose cone as the red flag was displayed. Should the race have been restarted he would have had to go to the back of the field when he stopped to replace the nosecone during the red flag.

Among all the carnage Kris Wall kept his nose clean to be classified sixth.

Heat Three
A vs D
David Sera – 2nd
Kris Wall – 12th

Race Notes:
Unlike the previous heat races, this one was reasonable sane. While held in what felt like the cold of night, but realistically it was only 5:30pm, the track was slippery and Sera ran at the front for the entire race. Kris Wall was in a battle pack just outside the top ten.
