Joseph Mawson in action at the Al Ain Raceway
JOSEPH Mawson helped the Australian kart racing team claim the Nations Cup.
The Hinchinbrook (Green Valley) racer joined the 11-driver team at the Rotax Max Challenge at the Al Ain Raceway in the United Arab Emirates late last month.
A total of 265 drivers, representing 59 countries, competed across four categories at the event – Junior Max, Senior Max, DD2 and DD2 Masters.
Canada came second with 21 drivers and South Africa finished third.
The Australian team was able to win kart racing’s highest honour after three runner-up placings, including Joseph’s in the Junior Max category.
Victorians Dave Sera and Jason Pringle were the other two racers who finished second.
Joseph, 15, placed behind Japan’s Ukyo Sasahara, who had won the event in 2009.
He said securing a podium finish was a great achievement.
“It’s a great feeling to be number two in the world – it was a long, hard race,” Joseph said.
“Unfortunately I couldn’t catch Ukyo, but I’m still very happy.
“You really had the best drivers from all around the world at the event, so to finish second among such high-class drivers is a great feeling.”
