Gread grabs it, Mawson leaps Lehane - from Rotax Pro Tour

Brinley Gread’s bounce back continued in stunning fashion today in Rotax DD2, taking honours in the first Rotax Pro Tour event of 2010/2011, downing DD2 debutantes Jackson Delamont and Jack Lindgren, whilst Tyler Greenbury added yet another trophy to his bulging mantelpiece in Rotax Light and Joseph Mawson had a phenomenal battle with Pierce Lehane.

The only trouble Gread had was in the final when Delamont attempted to get a run going into turn one and they collided, this unsettled the kart and resulted in the seat breaking with nine laps to go. Nevertheless, he was able to take victory by 5.9 seconds.

Lindgren worked hard to get his Arrow machine to his liking on his home track and pressured Delamont, the two crossing the line less than a second apart. Winner of the Sparco Rotax Nationals, Damian Ward had a coming together with Grant Donley on the opening lap but fought back to seventh.

The Junior Max Light Final was a classic Lehane vs Mawson battle with the Sydney-based double National Champion, Mawson showing his rival a clean pair of heels. After the lead swapped about six times in the opening four laps, Mawson was able to pull clear and take a dominant victory.

The battle for third went right to the wire between Michael Stewart and Mitchell Gee. The Canberra Tony Kart driver was able to just scrape across the line to take his second Rotax Pro Tour podium. It was a sensational Pro Tour debut for Gee.

In the first effort in getting the final started, Holly Patrizi was lucky to escape injury after rolling her kart at the start of Junior Max Light. An accident involving Jaxon Evans, Renee Gracie and several others claimed the Sinopec-supported driver. After Ambulance attention she was deemed to be fine.

Tyler Greenbury remained at the top of the tree in Rotax Light after a strong battle with Josh DeMaio. DeMaio had to fight his way through from 23rd on the grid in the Pre-Final to finish in second place and start the Final on the front row. He stuck with the Queenslander through the early running, but tyres proved crucial, Greenbury having the best MOJO rubber toward the end.

Making the move from Juniors this weekend, Macauley Jones – son of V8 Supercars Australia Board Member – Brad, slotted himself into third early on and had a reasonably lonely race, with all the action in front or behind. Man of the moment Trent Grubel was fourth followed by James Macken and Jaymee Frampton.

Rotax Heavy was a fascinating race. Queenslander, Brendan Nelson got the jump at the start and had Daniel Stein with him. Troy Woolston dropped back to third and watched the two in front trade blows.

Just past half race distance, the Woolston Intrepid showed its speed and it wasn’t long until he was past Stein after about two or three attempts. He then set sail for the leader with two laps to go. It looked very nearly like the Victorian may have had enough to challenge Nelson, but ran out of laps to mount a serious challenge.

After discovering a fuel line problem overnight, Dale Corbett had his machine working well in today’s Junior Max Light events, winning both the Pre-Final and Final convincingly. Brittany Hall led early in her CC Racing machine, but was rounded up by Corbett who won by 6.6 seconds. Hall had to stave off a challenge from Tony Anthony late in the race after he started toward the back of the field, but Anthony couldn’t get through.

Bruce Otter took out the Rotax Super Heavy event comfortably in his Stable Karting Tony Kart in comfortable fashion. He had the measure of Steven Lalas and Peter Beeten for the entire journey. The only time Otter looked troubled was in the Pre-Final, he had a throttle cable issue that allowed Lalas to be on racing terms, however still had the local’s measure in the run to the flag.

Danny Woodland continued his excellent form from yesterday in Rotax Over-35s. The Tony Kart pilot shot away at the start and won by 5.4 seconds from John Bailey and Luke Wall.

That completes Rotax Pro Tour events for 2010, with the next event to be conducted at Melbourne’s Todd Road across the weekend of January 28-30.
