WHITSUNDAY go-kart riders took to the region’s Raceway on Saturday to practice for the Great Barrier Reef title series, which will be held at the track this coming weekend.

Go-kart Club president Adam Stroud said the GBR titles would be the club’s “prestige event for the year”, featuring trophies and prizes and drawing competitors from as far afield as Brisbane and Cairns.

“Every club has their own title meeting once a year and this is ours. We’re hoping for upwards of 80 entries and we’re expecting multiple state and national title-holders to come here,” he said.

“It’s very exciting – that’s for sure. It’ll be our first big meeting to see how the facility handles it.”

Among the well-known kart riders who have already signed up to compete is Mackay driver Todd Stevens, who finished 5th in the national titles held in Darwin last month. Flying the Whitsundays’ flag will be Adam Stroud who finished 8th in the state titles and 12th in the nationals.

Mr Stroud said competition racing would kick off at 9am on Sunday, August 12 following a practice day on Saturday, August 11. Drivers can pre-nominate online or register in person on the day. All nominees will be placed into either a junior or adult prize draw.

The GBR title classes will cover the full spectrum of karting experience including cadets, rookies, junior national light, junior national heavy, sportsman light, sportsman heavy, sportsman superheavy, open performance and TaG100.

Racing will take the format of two heats, a pre-final and a final. Mr Stroud said the points system was based on a “final-only counts”.

“This basically means you win the final, you win the race.”

Spectators are welcome, with amenities such as food and a licensed bar available on the day.
