A RESURGENCE of go-kart racing is on the cards for Wagga if the past two days are anything to go by.

More than 140 enthusiasts from around NSW flocked to the city to battle it out in the second round of the Southern Star Series tournament.

Drivers travelled from Dubbo, Wollongong, Canberra, Grenfell, Sydney and even Newcastle to compete for coveted championship points and race against the best in the business.

Wagga & District Kart Racing Club public relations officer Liz Linsell said organisers were rapt with the facilities and the weekend as a whole.

“We’ve actually had 145 people come down and it’s just been fantastic,” Linsell said.

“People have come from all over the place too, some of them have travelled six hours or more to be here.

“It’s been brilliant.”

The atmosphere around the track was good but the racing on it was just as impressive.

Most of the drivers aged between seven and 74 were backing up from round one in Canberra and produced some breathtaking times around the tough Wagga circuit.

Local ace Kieran Doran was the pick of the bunch but Linsell said racing across all divisions was hot.

“Kieran Doran is smashing it, he’s racing really well,” she said.

“The locals have been sharing some tips with some of the visitors so everyone has been racing well.”

About 30 local drivers pitted their karts against those from out of town and performed admirably.

The competitors will now turn their attention to round three in Dubbo with three rounds left to rack up points.

The Wagga club will begin preparing for the Tas O’Hara Shield in September.

“I’d hope, looking at how many people are here this weekend, we would get a lot of people to that weekend too,” Linsell said.

The club still races once a month and invites anyone interested to try the sport.
