Giffin on right track after first win - From the Shepparton News

Racing is in Angus Giffin’s blood. The Shepparton young gun broke through for his first go-kart victory at round two of the Golden Power series at Morwell last weekend.

Giffin, 9, has been driving with Goulburn Valley Car Club for two years and competes in the cadet class.

Angus finished fourth in round one of the series at Rochester last month, despite missing one of the heats.

It is a continuous busy schedule for the Giffins, with training at Numurkah during the week and then off to competitions across the state on weekends.

‘‘We have 13 meetings to go yet with races at next month at Mildura, Swan Hill, Bendigo, Puckapunyal,’’ Matt said.

‘‘We try to get in the go-kart and train once week at Numurkah, and if we’re not racing we will be off to race.’’

Angus will be at it again today during round three of the Victorian Karting Series in Port Melbourne.

‘‘He’s going really well and that win last weekend will only encourage him going forward,’’ Matt said.

Other GV Car Club members also performed well at the Golden Power Series, with four members finishing on the podium.

Paul Keep and Josh O’Neil finished second in their respective classes, while Liam Ford and Andy Keep improved on previous races.

Angus’ father Matt Giffin has been involved in motor racing for many years and his son has not looked back since being introduced to the sport.

‘‘He has loved it and just taken to it like a duck to water,’’ Matt said.

‘‘He would come out on the track as a little boy and has just been around race cars forever, so we will be out racing twice a month somewhere.

‘‘His mentors would suggest he’s driving well above someone of his age, so it was a real shot of enthusiasm to come away with the win.’’
