THE final round of the Rotax Pro Tour karting competition is set to take place at Sandy Creek raceway, and Warwick racer Brett Sinkins is looking to improve on last year’s performance.

Rotax Heavy driver Sinkins said he was looking forward to the event.

“My last big race was the Queensland titles at Gladstone, so it will be good to get back in the seat,” he said.

Sinkins qualified fastest at last year’s event but was unable to hold onto his lead.

“It’s my home track and when I raced at Pro Tour last year I qualified first with a lap record,” he said.

“I still hold the record of 44.01.00 seconds.

“I was qualifying in the top five all weekend but suffered engine failure and couldn’t finish.

“I’m hoping nothing goes wrong this time round.”

Sinkins said he hoped to go all the way this year.

“I have a new kart with an Italian chassis,” he said.

“It’ll be quick if I set it up right.”

Sinkins took up racing 12 years ago.

“My dad used to race years ago and then he got into cars,” he said.

“My parents sort of got me into the sport.

“It would be good to get into cars but it comes down to money.”

Sinkins said he loved the competitiveness of it all.

The round six competition runs from July 20-22.

Rotax Pro Tour media liaison Liam Meegan said the competition had started last year.

“It is the final round of the series that began in October 2011 in Canberra,” he said.

“Since then it has visited Port Melbourne, Gympie, Albury, Griffith and now Warwick.”

Meegan said State Minister for Health and Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg would be attending Saturday’s event.

There are six classes that are offered: Rotax Light, Junior MaxDD2, DD2 Masters, Rotax Heavy and Rotax Over 40s.

Practice will be run on the Friday, with qualifying and heat races on the Saturday and pre-finals and finals on the Sunday.

The races will start at 9am and entry is free.
