This weekend, the world’s top young karting talents will converge at the renowned PF International Circuit in England for the FIA World Karting Championships, where five Australian drivers are set to compete in the OK and OK-Junior categories.
Flying the Aussie flag in the OK category is Lewis Francis, Xavier Avramides and Mika Lemasurier, who will face off against 109 other elite drivers from around the globe. In the OK-Junior category, William Calleja and James Anagnostiadis will carry the Australian flag in a field of 121 young competitors.
Anagnostiadis, a Junior Driver with the Mercedes Formula One Team, comes into the weekend riding a wave of momentum following his impressive performance at the Champions of the Future event last week. He topped the points table after the heat races at the PF International Circuit, the same track that will host this weekend’s competition. This strong showing has boosted his confidence as he aims for a podium finish this weekend.
Lemasurier, fresh from clinching the KA3 Senior Australian Championship two weeks ago, brings his winning form to the OK category. His recent success on home soil has set high expectations for his performance on the world stage while. Francis and Avramides have been based in Europe throughout the year while showing significant potential at various events.
The action begins with qualifying on Friday, leading into the intense heat races. Only the top 34 drivers will secure a place on the grid for the finals on Sunday, where they will battle it out for the prestigious world titles.
Australia has a proud history in international karting, with James Courtney being the last Australian to achieve major success at this level. Courtney was crowned the World Junior Champion in 1995 before going on to claim the Senior crown in 1997. This year’s contingent will be eager to add their names to that legacy.
