HEAVY downpours on Friday meant the first practice ride day for motorbike enthusiasts had to be cancelled on Sunday at the Whitsunday Raceway and Driver Education Training Facility.
Whitsunday Motor Sports Club president Andrew Auld said despite more than 150mm of water being on the track on Friday, it was reasonably dry on Sunday morning.
“It was the first test of the track in wet conditions and it performed well to drain most of the water away,” he said.
The practice day for motorbike riders has been pushed back until March 4.
This weekend, weather permitting, the first go-kart race meet will be held.
Go-kart fans from as far as Townsville and Rockhampton will be travelling to the region to take part.
Saturday will start with a working bee and practice racing, with all the action and official racing being held on Sunday.
“This track is great for riders in North Queensland,” Auld said.
“It draws a lot of people from across the state which is good for the community and tourism.
“We’re hoping we can source some funding in the future so we can get lights set up and host night races.
“This will help riders because they won’t be competing when it is stinking hot in the middle of the day.
“It will also be more comfortable for spectators.”
Auld said hosting night races might also allow more competitors to make it to events at the raceway because they could travel during the day and still get in a few hours of racing in the late afternoon and evening.
“The only negative thing will be the power bill; we might be able to use solar power for some of it.”

Go-kart competitors are encouraged to take part in the event this weekend, ensuring that they have been approved by the Australian Go-karting Association to determine what class they will race in.
