Epic turnout for nail-biting meeting - From the Whitsunday Times

THE Whitsunday Raceway was buzzing with action on the weekend as the karting contingent of the Whitsunday Moto Sports Club (WMSC) played host to more than 40 kart drivers for their first race meeting of the year.

All in attendance were thrilled to hit the tarmac track in perfect racing conditions for round four of the club championships after the last three race meetings had been cancelled due to cyclonic weather and rain.

There was a strong field of junior kart drivers competing which was a great boost for the sport in the Whitsundays.

A major highlight of the event went to WMSC members Narelle Rodriguez and Tim Nowell who suited up on Sunday to compete in their first kart race meet.

Nowell, who regularly supports his daughter Georgie Nowell at events, was buzzing after competing in heat one of the Queensland sportsman heavy class.

“I haven’t competed in motor sport for over 20 years but it felt really good to be back on the track again,” he said.

“The grip and speed of the kart was a hell of a lot of fun, and I personally, wanted to help Georgie to continue to promote Heart Kids while she is recovering from a shoulder injury.”

Georgie has combined her love of karting with a mission to help raise funds and awareness for the Heart Kids foundation but recently injured her shoulder while competing in Townsville.

The young karting star is expected to make a full recovery and is hoping to back in action for the Triple Crown event this weekend.

More than 60 kart drivers from across North Queensland will converge on the Whitsunday Raceway for the third instalment of the Triple Crown series.

Drivers have already competed in Townsville and will be making their way to Mackay this Saturday before competing in the Whitsundays on Sunday.

Spectators are welcome to catch all the action from the new viewing mound at the first corner and the canteen will be open all day
