Gympie Times Karting Challenge Heats Up

Butcher lets loose on the kart track – From the Gympie Times (http://www.gympietimes.com.au/story/2011/11/29/butcher-lets-loose-on-the-kart-track/)

THE action in The Gympie Times Race for Daniel go-kart competition is heating up, after another action-packed day at the Cooloola Kart track last Friday.

There was a touch of sibling rivalry on the track with Glenn Pagel signing on in attempt to beat his brother Mark’s top time of 48.6 seconds.

Glenn was a little cautious on the warm up laps but after seeing his lap times, he knew he had to put on something special to catch his brother.

In his time trial he really got the kart moving – not just forward but sideways as well – but couldn’t catch his brother, recording the third fastest time of 50.14s.

Len Shaw from Shaw’s Meats at Centro was another who had the kart going sideways so much he nearly came to grief in the final corner.

Shaw’s time of 53.91s puts him down the leader board but he, along with yours truly The Boofhead, will come into contention once the weight comes into play.

The final times will be adjusted at the end of the event to factor in the weights of the drivers.

Shaw, Boofhead and Ray Sellers are some of the heaviest in the field and will get seconds taken off their times when the lighter drivers are handicapped.

Event organiser Kym Coomber said the handicapping will really heat up the event.

Another thing heating up on Friday was Michelle Munn’s brakes.

Michelle, from Cooloola Foods, was really putting in some good times for her first time in the kart but almost cooked the brakes in her warm up.

A couple of bottles of water later Munn was back in the driver’s seat.

Her best time of 1.02.38 was the slowest so far but Munn took 20 seconds off her best warm up lap time and was getting quicker the more laps she put in around the circuit.

Next week will see a break in the racing while contestants are picked out of the hat for the next round.

Six lucky readers will get their chance to take on the celebrities and win a host of prizes put up by sponsors of the event. Don’t miss out on your chance to win and look out for entry coupons in The Gympie Times.
