YOU don’t have a lot of time to think when you travel at speeds of up to 90km/h with your backside only a few inches off the ground.
But, luckily for Courtney Smith, a competitive go-kartracer from Kellyville, her instinct has a way of taking over when she is flying around a track.
Smith, 26, spends every other weekend racing against the blokes in the KT Light category and despite being new to the sport she manages to match it with the best drivers in the state.
“Every race I just run on pure adrenalin which is an amazing feeling,” Smith said.
“You’ve got to make splitsecond decisions all the time and if you lose concentration for a second then it could be all over.
“I’ve been racing for about six months now and so far I haven’t had any major crashes but spinning out is always quite scary, especially near the wall.”
Smith joined team LB Racing after watching her partner Jamie Dicker compete last year.
“It (racing) seemed like a fun thing to do so I decided to give it a go and I haven’t looked back since,” she said.
“Lining up alongside the guys can be quite daunting at times but I give as good as I get and we certainly don’t go easy on each other.”
Smith recently made her first podium at a Nepean race meet and plans to return to her home track this weekend.
