NICK AGLAND ON TOP IN BRIAN FARLEY MEMORIAL

Nick Agland took a clean sweep of proceedings during today's opening day of the Brian Farley Memorial event today.

Karting veteran Nick Agland has proved once again why he’s considered one of Australia’s most talented drivers of all time by taking a clean sweep of proceedings during the opening day of the 2012 Brian Farley Memorial event at Sydney’s Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway today.

After setting the second fastest time during qualifying, Agland bounced back in the Top Ten Shootout to topple Thomas Phillips from the top spot (see below for an interview with Agland following qualifying).

The 34-year old then went on to claim the victory both heats, however, his win in the second 10-lap encounter was far from easy with Matthew Waters and Nathan Tigani crossing the line right behind the Tony Kart pilot.

“Not bad for an old fella,” smiled Agland.

“Overall I’m pretty happy, everything is working well but the other guys are getting better. It’s always hard pushing your own air around here and maintain the gap, especially when two guys behind you are working together to close in on you.

“We changed an engine for that second heat as well and it didn’t seem to be as good as the one we had on earlier in the day for some reason. It’s all looking good for tomorrow though.”

CRG drivers Jaie Robson and Jason Hryniuk enjoyed a spirited battle for the fourth and fifth placings during both heat races.

The changeable weather conditions caught a number of drivers out during qualifying, none more so than Joseph Mawson. The three-time National Junior Champion made the incorrect tyre choice on the drying circuit before enduring a broken chain on his second flying lap.

He charged from 38th to 17th in the opening heat, and was on track to better this performance in heat two before he was sidelined by an electrical issue.

Tomorrow’s action will see the drivers in the Clubman category line up for the reverse top 15 heat three. Half of the other categories completed their three heats today with the remaining heats, pre-finals and finals to be contested tomorrow from 8:00am.
