Australia will have four drivers on the grid at the inaugural FIA ‘Arrive and Drive’ World Cup at the LYL Circuit in Malaysia this weekend.
In a first for the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the event has 82 drivers competing who have been nominated by their respective ASNs, while the remaining 25 drivers after the event opened to individual entries.
Gold Coaster Hamish Campbell and Tasmanian Harry Bresnehan are the two Australians nominated by Karting Australia in the Junior and Senior categories respectively. Jack Larsen (Junior) and Jett Kocoski (Senior) secured individual entries to the event.
Each driver will compete in an identical, standardised karts provided by the OTK Group in the form of a Kosmic chassis fitted with Vega tyres and powered by a 125cc Vortex SV engine. The new innovative format will eliminate technical disparities, removes the costs associated with international travel of equipment, all while allowing driver skill set to be at the forefront throughout the competition.
“The debut of the FIA Arrive and Drive Karting World Cup marks an exciting new chapter for grassroots motorsport,” said FIA President, Ben Sulayem.
“The participation of so many of our dedicated Member Clubs shows our commitment to increasing accessibility and growing motorsport participation. By reducing cost barriers, we are putting driver talent centre stage. I am looking forward to seeing the next generation of motorsport champions take to the circuit.”
In addition to the event is an FIA provided driver development workshop for each driver covering safety, medical, nutrition, anti-doping and media training, all part of the motorsport governing body’s commitment to support the next generation of racing stars and invest in the future of the sport.
The drivers will be allocated their respective karts on Thursday ahead of practice on Friday. Qualifying and the heat races will be contested on Saturday before the drivers line up for the finals on Sunday.
