Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS), is presenting up-and-coming Australian kart racers with an opportunity to step into international motor sport.
A young female racer will be nominated by WAMS for a CIK-FIA Karting Academy qualifying session to take place at Friuli, Veneziain Italy on 2nd June.
The FIA Women in Motor Sport committee will chose the best six applicants from around the world to take part in the session.
First place in the session will win a seat in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy.
This takes place over three rounds and represents a fantastic opportunity on the world stage.
In 2011 WAMS nominated Caitlin Wood from NSW, who impressed the judges by qualifying with the third fastest time behind Lucile Cypriano (eventual winner) from France and Kim Oomen from the Netherlands.
Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) has set up a committee, headed by one of Australia’s most successful female drivers Leanne Tander, to nominate one candidate for this opportunity.
Young female karters born between 1997 and 1999 have until the end of April to submit their applications.
“This is the chance of a lifetime for a young racer,” said Leanne Tander.
“The chance to get involved in any kind of international racing is a huge opportunity – especially at such a young age.
“Last year we had Caitlin Wood chosen to compete in the qualifying session, and she represented Australia really well.
“Speaking with Caitlin, she believes the experience really helped her – both in terms of learning the practical side of racing, and managing the other aspects of her career, like interacting with media, sponsors, etc.”
Applications should be sent to Leanne Tander via email – leanne@tandersport.com – by 5pm (AEST), Monday 30th April, and must include the applicants name, date of birth, a detailed history of their karting career and contact phone number.
This is an exciting time to be a female in Australian motor sport with CAMS, the FIA and Women of Australian Motor Sport offering a number of exciting opportunities.
Among these are the CAMS Women’s Driver Development Program, which kicks off at the AIS in June, and the WAMS Junior Development scholarship, which is open for applicants until May 30th.
