Townsville City Council Councillor Liam Mooney has labelled the visit of the Penrite Australian Kart Championship as a coup for the region, proving that Townsville is the major events capital of North Queensland.
“Of course we love our North Queensland Cowboys, but having the National Kart Championship come to our region further reenforces that Townsville is not a one-trick-pony and that we’re not just all footy,” said Cr Mooney.
Councillor Mooney took the opportunity to speak with some of the local racers, gaining insights on the Townsville Kart Club, and the machines that will eclipse 120kph around the 1013 metre, 11 turn course.
“I’d highly recommend that the local community come out to Sun City Raceway and see 17 of our local drivers compete against 300 of Australia’s best racers from all over the country.”
“It’s brilliant that this runs back-to-back with the NTI Townsville 500, and it gives our local community something to do every weekend, while also being a great opportunity for visitors to stay for two weekends.”
The Penrite Australian Kart Championship injects approximately $1.3 million into every community it visits, while also adding the live television exposure of the racing over the weekend broadcast on the Seven Network’s 7+ streaming platform this Saturday from 12:30pm and 11:30am on the Sunday.
Sun City Raceway is 20 minutes west of Townsville on Shaw Road and offers free entry for spectators along with excellent amenities, and refreshments available for purchase.
