Jason Wells has been a scrutineer at club level, enjoying teaching newcomers to the sport of Karting what the regulations and rules mean, and how to best follow them, while watching people grow a spectacular passion for such an incredible sport.
Wells’ passion for karting began five years ago, where he and his son both began kart racing before an abundance of opportunities unravelled for him, enabling a rewarding and fulfilling position within the karting community.
He has officiated at a variety of events during this time, including a number of rounds of the Australian Kart Championship in 2025 – where he was presented with the Official of the Round Award in June at Newcastle.
When it came to his favourite event, he’s had the pleasure of officiating at, Wells stated quickly that the Joseph Bianchini Memorial earlier in this year was a highlight event.
“Obviously I learnt a lot going to the Australian Kart Championship, and I’ve learnt a lot at all of the events I’ve been to, but my favourite event? I reckon it’d be the Joseph Bianchini Memorial back in April at Griffith. It was just a really good vibe up there, and the club put on a really, really good show,” said Wells.
“Obviously, that race weekend is going to mean a lot more now as well.”
After becoming an integral part of the karting community, Wells gave some heartfelt advice to those who are on the fence about joining the sport as an official.
“Volunteering to me doesn’t always have to be in an official role. We need volunteers as far as people on lawnmowers, and leading up to club days, we need volunteers at the track – we need volunteers to help prep the track and the gravel traps. We need volunteers in the canteens and behind the scenes,” added Wells.
“I know officiating isn’t for everybody, but I think volunteering is more than just being an official; we get recognition as the officials, but the people behind the scenes need as much recognition as well.”
