Youngster has need for speed - From the Cairns Post

HE is only 10, but young go-kart star Brodie Davis is already dreaming big.

The Mareeba youngster makes no secret of his desire to one day become an elite V8 supercar driver.

But for now his focus will be on this weekend’s Gold Coast 600 Race of Stars, where he will be the youngest driver representing the Far North in the cadet category.

‘‘I’m hoping to get a good result – a finish in the top 10 would be nice,’’ he said.

‘‘I love racing with other people side by side every lap, that gets your blood pumping.’’

The talented driver has won all but one round of the Cairns Kart Club season and racked up a swath of impressive finishes across the state this year.

Brodie’s mother Heidi Jonsson said her family had invested a significant amount of time and money travelling to major race meetings throughout Queensland.

‘‘We just love racing, it’s a great family sport,’’ said Ms Jonsson, whose father Graham and uncle Warren once raced at Bathurst.

‘‘If we don’t do it together, then we don’t do it all.’’

A sausage sizzle fundraiser was held on Saturday at Jonsson’s Farm Market to help fund Brodie’s trip to the Gold Coast and raise awareness about the sport in Cairns.

Ms Jonsson said go-kart racing was how many top F1 and V8 drivers began their careers.

‘‘I believe that if anybody has a dream big enough, they can achieve it,’’ she said.
