WINNING DEBUT FOR LOCAL LAD

Adelaide’s Josh Tynan upstaged his more fancied rivals to win on debut in the CIK Stars of Karting Championship presented by Castrol EDGE at South Australia’s Bolivar Raceway on Sunday.

After stunning his opposition with a heat race win and two third placings on Saturday, the Next Level Media/Quick Shade-backed Energy Corse Australia driver was dominant on finals day.

Starting from pole position in the opening final in the KF2 class, Tynan greeted the chequered flag two-seconds clear of Shamick Racing’s Leigh Nicolaou to claim pole position for the main event.  He then took another lights to flag victory in Sunday’s second 34-lap encounter to become the first South Australian driver to win at the highest level of Australian karting since 2009.  He is also only the fifth South Australian driver to have won a round of the championship in its 21-year history.

“Like every racer, I want to win every time I race but I was very realistic about this weekend having not even driven a KF2 kart before,” said Tynan.

“To come away with the win is just unreal.

“After qualifying I set my sights of finishing inside the top five and then when I won the opening heat, my goal for the weekend moved towards making the podium.

“It was simply an unreal weekend, to be able to race in front of my family and friends against the best drivers from around Australia and then to win as well was just unbelievable.”

While he may live only 15 minutes from the Bolivar Raceway, he has only competed at the venue on a handful of occasions over the past few years.

“It’s my home track but I ‘ve only raced there once or twice in the past few years, and realistically only raced a handful of major events over the last 12 months,” said Tynan.

“With this win, I’m hoping to be able to put some deals together to make the most of the opportunity I’ve got with the Energy Corse Australia and build on this weekend’s great result.”

By virtue of a hard charging effort across the weekend Troy Loeskow moved into the championship lead.  The Bundaberg driver failed to post a time in qualifying after failing to fit his transponder, he would eventually claw his way into third spot behind reigning champion Matthew Waters in the final.

In the KZ2 ranks, a rivalry of epic proportions is brewing with reigning Champion Joey Hanssen and David Sera aiming to make their mark on the championship.

The pair battled with intensity throughout the weekend before coming together in the early laps of the opening final on Sunday, which was won by Sera ahead of Queenslander Kel Treseder.

When the pair came together exiting turn three on the opening lap of the second final it infuriated Sera after he was left to watch on from the sidelines as Hanssen dominated proceedings.

The Dutchman crossed the line first, however, his joy was shortlived after officials handed him a ten-second penalty for the contact with Sera.

Hanssen’s penalty handed Jason Faint a career-first round win and the South Australian Championship, however, such was Hanssen’s dominance of the race the time penalty only dropped him to second place.  After struggling for speed across the majority of the weekend 2012 Champion Chris Hays rounded out the podium.

In KF3, Canberra driver Zane Morse fended off numerous challenges from the likes of final one winner Bryce Fullwood, Arrow Karts driver Aaron Cameron and Tony Kart pilot Andrew Kahl.

The quartet enjoyed an intense battle at the front of the field in the second final before Morse took over the front running for the final time with ten laps remaining.

Morse’s win is the second by a championship rookie in as many rounds while Fullwood’s win in the opening final, and runner-up in the second, was enough for him to take over the lead in the championship.

Daniel Rochford took out the TAG 125 Light final to claim the South Australian Championship ahead of Jayden Sharrad and Luke Bergens.  One of Rochford’s main rivals, and early race leader, Kris Walton was eliminated mid race after attempting a pass to regain the lead.

In TAG 125 Heavy Brendan Nelson added the South Australian Championship to his ever-growing resume with a superb performance.   The Queenslander led throughout the entire final to cross the line well clear of Paul Rodgers and Rick Pringle.

The top four drivers in the Rookies final were rarely separated throughout the final with Jack Doohan, Joshua Smith, Jordyn Sinni and Tyler O’Leary dicing it out.  A pass on the last lap provided Smith with the win ahead of Doohan and Sinni.

In the TAG 125 Restricted classes Daniel Boorman won the Light division for the second year in succession and David Rinaldi was victorious in the Heavy ranks.

The CIK Stars of Karting Championship will now head to Victoria’s Hume International Raceway in Puckapunyal for Round Three on June 14/15.
