ORANGE Kart Club vice president Col Jones is hoping this weekend’s karting action will be a prelude to some major changes to the sport state wide.

The club is running an innovative format labelled the Super Heavy Challenge starting on Saturday, with the racing set to take into account the weight of the driver which is different to normal meets run like the national or state titles.

With its unique classification system and the glowing popularity of this weekend’s test run, Jones was hoping for the ultimate compliment from the sport’s governing body.

“We’re hoping to have this event recognised as a state titles,” Jones said, with 43 pre-registered entries already on the grid.

Jones said entries should exceed 100.

“It’s great,” he continued.

“We don’t have a lot of events for the heavier drivers at all, and this event is sort of aimed at that.”

Jones also predicted a large portion of the field will be from the central west.

“I think half of the field will be from Orange,” Jones spruiked. “We’re hoping to get 100 karts in total. It’s been great so far. At this stage, they’re the unofficial state titles but we’re hoping after this weekend that’ll change and it’ll be recognised as an official event.”

Racing will begin at the Orange Kart Club circuit, Perc Griffith Way on Saturday and conclude Sunday afternoon.
