For more than half of his life Perth’s Steven Scoble has been chasing karting championships across the country.

Later this month (April 22-24) the National Championships are being held at his home track, the Cockburn International Raceway, in Henderson just South of Perth and Scoble can’t wait!

Scoble’s first race aboard a go-kart was at the Cockburn circuit back in 1995, it is also the venue where he secured his first State Championship a year later.

Having made nine previous attempts to win the National Championship, the 25 year-old believes his home track knowledge this year will hold him in the best position for victory.

“I’ve always been around the mark in the major events and hopefully 2011 is my year,” said Scoble.

“Throughout my career I’ve had a second and two thirds at the Nationals, won four State Championships and finished on the podium over a dozen times in State Titles.  It would mean a lot to me, and my family, to be able break through and win a National Championship – especially on my home track.

“While all of the top drivers will use their experience to learn the circuit pretty quickly, I think the local knowledge and racecraft will come into play come Sunday when the championships are decided.”

Scoble will be competing in the highly competitive Clubman Light and Heavy categories, it is the first time he has competed in the latter at a major event.

In the Clubman Light category he will line up against two of the winningest drivers in Australian karting, the Sera cousins David and James from Victoria.  Between them they have secured 14 national championships and an amazing 62 state championships.

“David and James will no doubt start as the favourites, with James as the defending champion in the category but I think young Jordie Ford from Victoria will be right up there as will my fellow West Aussie BD Souter-Dawson,” said Scoble.

“Clubman Heavy is even more intense.  It is the first time I’ve raced the heavier division at a major event and I looked at the entry list the other day and came up with 14 genuine contenders who could win – it’s going to be tough.”

Scoble is one of almost 300 karters who will be in action across ten categories at the championships with competitors beginning practice on Monday April 18 ahead of qualifying on Friday April 22.  The heat races will be contested on Saturday April 23 followed by the championship finals on Sunday April 25.

The Cockburn International Raceway is located on Gemma Road, Henderson.
