Steering the locals - From the Northern Star

IF YOU were down near the corner of Molesworth and Magellan Streets in Lismore on Saturday morning, you would have seen a heap of young local kart drivers and their karts on show as part of a Lismore Kart Club Show ‘n’ Shine.

Some of the drivers from the club were down there showing off their karts and giving local people the chance to ask questions or get information about getting involved with the club.

It was also a little lead in to their big weekend coming up – the Lismore Young Guns Titles on May 2-4 where some of the club’s 150 members will take on drivers from all across Australia in one of the biggest youth karting events in the country.

President of the Lismore Kart Club, Diana Smith, said there was so much to love about being part of the Lismore Kart Club.

“They all get on so well, it’s a great camaraderie,” she said of the young drivers.

“They have a lot of respect for each other.”

Being part of the club also gives them confidence and teaches them many life skills for the future, she added.

Their driving skills improve from being on the track, they get to learn basic mechanics from working on their karts, and they learn confidence and public speaking skills from getting on the podium.

Drivers can come into the sport at any level, Ms Smith said, so for any newbies or anyone wishing to get back into karting, their welcome to contact the club to get started, or to come down and watch the action at Young Guns.

Lismore Young Guns Titles will be held at the Lismore Go Kart Track behind the Showgrounds, North Lismore on May 2-4.
