STATEMENT: MATTHEW HARRISON

It is with sadness that the Australian Karting Association acknowledges the tragic passing of Matthew Harrison.

Harrison, 20, was a member of the Newcastle Kart Club for 11 years prior to moving to compete in the New South Wales Motor Racing Series in the Formula Vee category last year.

Harrison was competing in a Formula Vee race on Saturday at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway when he was involved in an accident.

Emergency services attended the incident and transferred Harrison to Sydney’s Westmead Hospital where he later died.

“Matthew and his family were fantastic members of the karting community throughout New South Wales and they will be sorely missed,” said AKA New South Wales President Steve King.

“Since joining the sport as a youngster Matthew developed into a very likeable young lad and his mature attitude and willingness to assist others when required held him in a high regards with everyone in karting.

“Our sincerest sympathies go out to Matthew’s parents Allan and Rose, along with their family and friends.”

The AKA will post funeral details for members when they become available.
