Adelaide local, Joshua Tynan has stunned the Castrol EDGE CIK Stars of Karting KF2 field in the opening day of hostilities at Bolivar Raceway in his first ever appearance in the category.

Tynan’s deal to come into the Series this weekend was so fresh, that this morning’s qualifying session was the first time that he had driven the Next Level Media Energy kart. Whilst qualifying – held in changeable track conditions due to early morning rain – didn’t yield a great result, he made short work of the field to win his first ever CIK Stars of Karting heat race.

So stunning was his performance across the remaining two heats of the day, he will start on pole for tomorrow’s first final. Heat race wins were shared with Victorian Adam Willison (Energy) and Sydney-sider, Nathan Tigani (PCR).

It has been a good day for the South Aussies in KF2, with Championship regular, Ben Edwards due to start alongside Tynan in the first Final.

“What a whirlwind,” said Tynan. “I wasn’t expecting to be in the field, then a last minute arrangement came together, I’m here and I win my first ever CIK race – it’s hard to believe! I couldn’t have done it without the support of Next Level Media and Energy Corse Australia – they’ve both jumped behind me, which obviously I’m appreciative for.

“It’s been a long time between drinks for South Aussies at the front of the pack in CIK competition, so we’ll enjoy this and hopefully be able to convert that to results tomorrow.”

Championship leader and round one winner, Scott Sorenson is building a new Arrow Kart after a scary incident in the final heat of the day. One of his fellow competitors spun on the exit of the first turn, leaving Sorensen nowhere to go but straight into the side. It compacted the width of the Harrington Doyle Racing team chassis to the point of a centimetre. More importantly he was flung awkwardly from the kart but escaped injury.

In the KZ2 Gearbox category, defending Australian Champion Joey Hanssen showed his absolute class and enjoyment of the Bolivar Raceway. The Dutchman took the Freem Fast Time in the five man Shootout, after former Aussie Champion, Matthew Wall set the provisional pole position in qualifying. From there on in it was all Hanssen, dominating each heat race by a healthy margin.

Victorian Jordan Ford – who is a Cadet Strength and Conditioning Coach with AFL franchise, the Western Bulldogs – had an outstanding day and will start alongside Hanssen on the front row tomorrow. The Vemmekart driver didn’t miss a start all day long.

The big talking point came from heat two in KZ2 when Kurt Kostecki rode out a massive rollover on the front straight after a coming together with Jake Coleman. It was one of the scariest incidents seen in CIK Stars of Karting history, however the West Aussie was quickly to his feet and expressed his disdain to Coleman.

The Premier Junior category – KF3 – set a new benchmark today also, with Darwin racer, Bryce Fullwood setting the Freem Fast Time. It was the first time that a Northern Territory racer has set the pole position in a CIK Stars of Karting event. Joining him in the five man shootout were two ACT-based racers, a West Australian and a Victorian, outlining the true national nature of the Championship.

Fullwood took out the first heat before Sydney-sider, Andrew Kahl struck back with two emphatic heat race victories. Kahl did not finish the first heat race after a frantic opening lap. Fullwood will start tomorrow’s first final from pole.

Round one dominator and Championship leader – Jayden Ojeda – could just manage 20th qualifying position this morning. With eyes on the Championship though, Ojeda performed solidly and advanced his way forward in each of his heat races and will start the first final from position number seven.

In the TaG Light support category, Daniel Rochford recorded two race wins and has earned the pole for tomorrow morning’s pre-final, whilst Queenslander Brendan Nelson continued his strong performances in TaG Heavy, also with two heat race wins. Jack Doohan set the pole in Rookies – however will have to start the pre-final from fourth – with Jordyn Sinni earning the right to pace the field.

In TaG Restricted, Daniel Boorman has shown the field a clean set of heels winning both races.

The action is back underway at Bolivar Raceway at 8:30am on Sunday morning local time (9am Eastern) with all the action streamed live and exclusively on Australia’s leading motor racing news website, Speedcafe.com via the linkĀ www.speedcafe.com.au/livekarting.
