The Bundaberg karting community is getting set for it’s biggest event in a decade with the Bundaberg Kart Club hosting the 2013 Queensland Karting Championships at the Dromeside Raceway this weekend.

After winning his maiden state crown in Gladstone last year, Produce Farmer Clinton Marcon is the reigning champion in the highly competitive Clubman Heavy category.  As a result he will start as one of the favourite for this year’s championships.

“There is very little doubt that home track knowledge will come into play but it’s more about getting the set-up of the kart right rather than the characteristics of the track,” said Marcon.

“I changed chassis a couple of weeks ago to an Italian-made Energy chassis in the Clubman class and have been doing a fair bit of testing to get it just right for this weekend.”

After a drought of 12 years in blue-ribbon events, Marcon’s win last year was a sweet one and made him even hungrier for more success in 2013.

“After a lot of runner-up placings it was a big relief to finally break through and win one.  The guys who race in Clubman Heavy have all been around for many years – it’s extremely tough to get a win on the board,” said Marcon.

This year is the first time since 2003 that Bundaberg has hosted the State Championships, Marcon finished fourth in the Junior Clubman ranks in that event where current Dunlop Series V8 Supercar driver Ash Walsh claimed the victory.

Along with Marcon, the local favourites will include Bundaberg’s most capped racer Kel Treseder, who is competing in both the Leopard and Rotax Heavy categories. Local teenager Troy Loeskow will also be competing in three separate categories at the event with the Castrol EDGE CIK Stars of Karting Series regular lining up in the Clubman Light, Leopard Light and Rotax Light categories.

The entry list is fluttered with local drivers who are expected to figure prominently including James Litzow in the fastest junior category (Junior Rotax) and Joseph Black, who will compete in the 32-driver strong Junior National Light field.

Competitors and Teams will begin arriving in the Wide Bay region today with practice beginning tomorrow.  Qualifying will be contested on Friday June 28 followed by heat races on Saturday June 29 followed by the Championship Finals on Sunday June 30.

The Dromeside Raceway is located on University Drive, Bundaberg.  Admission is free for spectators.
